Sample Submission - It is adviseable to contact us before starting experiments requiring proteomics. We can give advice and provide protocols. Samples should be submitted by bringing them to the CPF in the Sir William Dunn Pathology School, along with a completed sample submission form, which can be downloaded below, and a purchase order number (for departments other than the Pathology School).

  • Sample Submission Form

  • PLEASE AVOID SUBMITTING SAMPLES CONTAINING NP-40, TRITON AND OTHER DETERGENTS CONTAINING POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL CHAINS. THESE CAN CONTAMINATE THE HPLC SYSTEM AND BE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE. IN ADDITION THEIR PRESENCE GREATLY REDUCES THE NUMBER OF PROTEINS IDENTIFIED IN A SAMPLE. IF IN DOUBT PLEASE CONTACT US BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR SAMPLE AND WE CAN ADVISE ON SUITABLE ALTERNATIVES.

Notes on sample storage

  • Excise gel bands on a clean surface with a clean scalpel blade. Dice gel band into 1 mm cubes.
  • Try and avoid using polyoxyethylene containing detergents such as Triton, Tween etc. Also avoid washing glassware that comes into contact with any buffers etc with detergents containing polyoxyethylene.
  • Store gel pieces at + 4 degrees centrigade.
  • Use high quality plasticware. Some plasticware can leach contaminants into your sample when exposed to organic solvents. We recommend using Eppendorf tubes.
  • For large numbers of gel pieces we will supply a special 96 well plate suitable for in-gel digestion. DO NOT USE other 96 well plates.
  • Take care to avoid keratin contamination. Wear powder-free gloves and use very clean glassware. Old and communal stock chemicals are common sources of keratin contamination - particularly loading dye.
