Cardiovascular Research Initiative Biomedical research is an increasingly multidiciplinary undertaking. We have developed considerable expertise in a number of key areas such as macrophage gene targeting, chemokine biology and immunohistochemistry. We benefit greatly from our interactions with other groups within Oxford University as part of the Cardiovascular Research Initiative (CVRI). We also have very productive collaborations with groups in Europe and the USA.

Professor Hugh Watkins is the head of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and Director of the CVRI. Hugh's research interests are centred on the genetics of cardiomyopathies. We collaborate on projects related to the regulation of Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) gene expression and genetic risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

 

Professor Keith Channon is a member of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and an Honorary Consultant in Cardiology. Keith's major research interest is in the role of NO and superoxide in the regulation of endothelial cell function. We have a joint British Heart Foundation Project Grant to develop gene transfer technologies for studying the role of chemokines in atherosclerosis.

 

Professor Siamon Gordon is Professor of Cellular Pathology at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology. Siamon has a distinguished track record in the study of macrophage biology and we collaborate on several aspects of macrophage function specifically related to atherosclerosis including analysis of the function of the macrophage scavenger receptor.

 

Professor Seppo Ylä-Herttuala is Professor of Molecular Medicine and Pharmacology at the A.I. Virtanen -Institute, University of Kuopio in Finland. Seppo has extensive experience of developing retroviral and adenoviral vectors for vascular gene transfer and gene therapy application. We are collaborating with Seppo on adenoviral gene transfer in models of atherosclerosis and restenosis.

 

Professor Chris Glass is Professor of Medicine at the University of California at San Diego. Chris has made important contributions to understanding how mammalian transcription is regulated by nuclear hormone receptors such as PPAR gamma. We are collaborating with Chris on the analysis of IL-4 regulation of macrophage gene expression.
